Oyster vasa-like gene as a marker of the germline cell development in Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer

The oyster vasa-like gene was previously demonstrated to be specifically expressed in germline cells of adult oysters Crassostrea gigas. In the present study, this gene was used as a molecular marker to establish the developmental pattern of germline cells during oyster ontogenesis. using whole-mount in situ hybridization and real-time PCR. The Oyvlg transcripts appeared to be localized to the vegetal pole of unfertilized oocytes and maternally transmitted to embryos. At early development, these maternal transcripts were observed to segregate into a single blastomere, from the CD macromere of 2-cell stage to the 4d mesentoblast of blastula. Pathogenic threats and probiotic use in larviculture of the scallop, Pecten maximus ArchiMer

During a series of experiments, bacteriological elements in scallop larval rearing were investigated: larvae susceptibility to pathogens as a function of their age, and the use of probiotic bacteria during larviculture. Younger larvae (d5 PF) were highly more susceptible to pathogenic-challenge than their older siblings, which were challenged at an older age (d15 PF). A challenge with 104 CFU mL−1 of V. pectenicida killed 100% of d5 PF larvae 7 days following challenge, yet killed only 9% of d15 PF larvae 9 days following challenge. Pavlova lutheri: Production, preservation and use as food for Crassostrea gigas larvae ArchiMer

The haptophyte Pavlova lutheri was cultivated in a 4-l flat alveolar photobioreactor (FAP) in semi-continuous mode during 35 days, achieving a mean volumetric productivity of 0.4 g l-1 day-1. The microalgal culture was harvested from the photobioreactor at an average concentration of 3.5 g l-1 and subjected to different storage conditions in which the effects of temperature (1 °C, 4 °C and 25 °C), air supply and preservative (ascorbic or propionic acid) addition on the viability of the stored suspensions were investigated. Prédation de la palourde japonaise Ruditapes philippinarum par le baliste Balistes capricus ArchiMer

1988 s’avérait être, pour le bassin d'Arcachon, l'année d'un réel départ de l’élevage de la palourde Japonaise Ruditapes phillipinarum. Cinq millions de naissains étaient ainsi ensemencés, principalement au printemps, soit 4 a 5 fois plus que les années antérieures. La récolte théorique aurait dû avoisiner 50 tonnes en 1990, soit 1/10 de la production nationale . Or d'importantes mortalités étaient signalées au cours de l’été 1988, 80% environ du cheptel ensemencé ayant été touché.

Sampling of Ophiura texturata was carried out during a two year cycle . Demographic structure is obtained using biometric method. The main parameter s of the population are computed . Plurimodal year classes are followed, and the periods of spawning and recruitment are defined . Bathymetric distribution taking into account the seasonal fluctuation is exposed. Segregation of the year classes and cohorts, and variations of their densities are demonstrated.

Production of microalgal concentrates by flocculation and their assessment as aquaculture feeds ArchiMer

A novel technique was developed for the flocculation of marine microalgae commonly used in aquaculture. The process entailed an adjustment of pH of culture to between 10 and 10.6 using NaOH, followed by addition of a non-ionic polymer Magnafloc LT-25 to a final concentration of 0.5 mg L−1. The ensuing flocculate was harvested, and neutralised giving a final concentration factor of between 200- and 800-fold. This process was successfully applied to harvest cells of Chaetoceros calcitrans, C. muelleri, Thalassiosira pseudonana, Attheya septentrionalis, Nitzschia closterium, Skeletonema sp., Tetraselmis suecica and Rhodomonas salina, with efficiencies ≥80%. Testing of the Argentina oyster, Ostrea puelchana, in several French oyster farming sites ArchiMer

Because of diseases affecting fIat oyster Ostrea edulis, acclimatization of the Argentina oyster Ostrea puelchana has been tested in 1989-90 in five French oyster farming sites. Following ICES recommendations , hatchery produced juveniles, from parents imported from Argentina, were transferred to experimental si tes in summer 1989. Very high mortalities occurred, reaching 46 to 98% in March-Apri1 1990. They continued later on, resulting in the end of experiments in March 1991. The food quality of Tetraselmis suecica slurry for Crassostrea gigas spat ArchiMer

In an attempt to provide cost-effective alternatives to live microalgae and to simplify hatchery-nursery procedures, concentrated microalgae appear to be very promising. Due to its high preservation ability, Prasinophytes appear to be good candidates for such alternative diets. Nevertheless, in a previous study the utilization of Tetraselmis suecica was only conceivable for old Crassostrea gigas larvae. In the present work its nutritional quality has been accordingly searched on ]apanese oyster's juveniles. Whatever the assemblages and condition, fresh or preserved microalgae, T. suecica did not allow an adequate postlarval development in C. gigas.

The food value of starch rich flagellates for Pecten maximus (Linné) larvae. Preliminary results ArchiMer

Pecten maximus larvae exhibit amylase as a main digestive enzyme indicating the possibility of starch hydrolysis. The food value of Rhodomonas salina and Porphyridium cruentum, both rich in starch, on the development of Pecten maximus larvae was investigated. The larval development was studied by means of an image analysis technique and epifluorescence microscopy was used for detecting ingestion and digestion of each phytoplankton species. The biochemical contents of algae and larvae were also assessed. The best growth of Pecten maximus larvae was observed when fed with the mixture PTS (plurispecific control). The selection of an ideal diet for Ostrea edulis (L.) broodstock conditioning (part B) ArchiMer

Four microalgae species (Rhodomonas salina, Thalassiosira weissflogii, Thalassiosira pseudonana and Pavlova lutheri) were evaluated to estimate their potential as food for Ostrea edulis (L.) reproductive conditioning. Best ingestion and absorption were observed with R. salina (3.44 and 1.59 mg g− 1 h− 1, respectively), followed by T. pseudonana (2.75 and 0.98 mg g− 1 h− 1) and P. lutheri (2.40 and 0.91 mg g− 1 h− 1). Toxicité d'un désherbant, l'atrazine-simazine, sur les jeunes stades larvaires de Crassostrea gigas et sur deux algues fourrages, Isochrysis aff-galbana et Chaestoceros calcitrans ArchiMer

Corn culture has strongly developed in Aquitaine (France) over the past years, and lead to an increased use of pesticides and herbicides. One of the most commonly used formulations around the coast of the Arcachon Bay, an historical oyster spat capture zone, is the Atrazine-Simazine mix. The action limits of this product are defined on Crassostrea gigas larvae and on two nanoplankton test strains used in a controlled environment for their food, Isochrysis aff-galbana and Chaetoceros calcitrans. Herbicides can indeed directly impact on oyster larvae, but they can also have a negative impact by interfering with the development of the algae used as aquaculture feed and feed for veligeres.

Utilisation des "algues-fourrage" en aquaculture ArchiMer

Studies concerned with unicellular algae as a food source for laval and post-larval stages of commercially valuable bivalves are reviewed. As only about ten species of microalgae are now produced in large quantities in commercial hatcheries, these are described and their main characteristics illustrated.
